Learn About the Literacy Outreach Program

The Literacy Outreach Program at the Oxnard Public Library provides one-to-one tutoring to adults in the community who need help improving their ability to read or write. The program is free to any English-speaking adult, age 18 or older, who can meet with a volunteer tutor once or twice a week at the Main Library on “A” street in downtown Oxnard. Each learning session lasts approximately one to two hours.Adult learners and their tutors commit to at least three months of working together.

Volunteer tutors attend a required six hour tutor-training class before being matched with an adult learner. Volunteer tutors do not need to have any prior tutoring experience. A desire to help an adult work toward his or her potential through improved reading and writing is all that is needed. All training and tutoring take place at the Main Library during regular library hours.

The next tutor training dates and times are:

Session 1 - Saturday, February 9, 9:30am - 12:30pm - Meeting Room B

Session 2 - Saturday, February 23, 9:30am - 12:30pm - Meeting Room B
